Treating Dry Skin with Honey
Have you ever had dry skin that leaves you constantly itching for relief? The truth is you’re not alone as millions of people experience dry skin due to cold weather, irritating body cleansers, or mild skin irritations. In fact, you probably search for products for comfort to alleviate any further scratching of the bothersome, dry area.
Skin that becomes dry, red and flaky requires immediate attention to avoid any further discomfort, or irritation of the skin. Although there are several products available on the market today to aid your dry skin, a natural remedy may be a welcome alternative to provide your skin with the moisturizer it needs.
Reasons honey is a great natural remedy to treat dry skin.
• Honey is a natural humectant that can provide your skin with the moisture it may desperately need to combat the dryness. Humectants are ingredients that are widely used as in skin creams as an additive to retain moisture and can be seen in many popular lotions and shampoos, as well.
• Natural Anti-Bacterial Agent
Another reason honey can be used as a moisturizer is that it contains high acidity levels that can act as a natural anti-bacterial agent. This is an added benefit for any skin that is irritated, red, and more prone to infection.
How to Treat Dry Skin with Honey
• To treat dry skin with honey, apply a thin layer on the skin and leave it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing it off. Your skin should soon feel relief as the honey naturally locks in the moisture to your skin. If you prefer not to use honey alone, you can add it to your favorite moisturizer along with cocoa butter. You may want to melt the cocoa butter first before combining it with the other ingredients, which will create a rich, emollient that can be easily applied to the skin with your fingers, or a sponge.
• Honey can also be used along with other natural ingredients to exfoliate the skin of any excess of dry, flaky skin cells. To do this you combine 2 teaspoons of honey and 2 egg yolks, and mix well. This can be applied anywhere that has a problem area of dry skin. Leave the mixture on for about 30 minutes to be sure it soaks in and then rinse off. Then, follow the procedure with your favorite moisturizer to further condition the skin.
You may want to warm the honey slightly and then gently massage it into any overly dry patches of skin for an added effect. The dry skin cells may then more easily rub off; leaving your skin feeling renewed and smooth once more.
Honey is used to treat common dry skin problems, but if you have any serious skin condition, it’s best to consult your doctor if this may be an option for you.
